Summer of slimming spam for women.
Spammers have begun targeting women with 'miracle-cure' health related offers according to the latest figures released by email management specialist Email Systems.
In a move which closely resembles the way that many health related products are marketed extremely aggressively to men via email, the latest spam e-mails are also phrased unambiguously with titles such as "No Room For Thunder Thighs In a Bikini" or "No Room For Cellulite In a Bikini" and are clearly timed to coincide with the run up to the summer holiday season.
Phrased specifically to encourage the female recipient to question her physical attributes and sense of self worth, the emails offer products such as body-wraps for the home, which are promised to deliver a 6 – 8 inch reduction of body fat in a single hour along with a 100% guarantee of effectiveness (see below).
"The move to directly target women with health related mails this month shows spammers' ever-present desire to develop new audiences for their products by any means necessary. Unfortunately, such scare-marketing to specific audiences is becoming a frequently adopted tactic by the spamming community," said Neil Hammerton, CEO of Email Systems.
Email Systems' monthly statistics also reveal that hundreds of millions of spam emails were distributed promoting gambling during May.
The gambling spam adopted strict formats - a specific image, such as a roulette wheel or blackjack table, incentivised users to click through to a gambling site. However, in an attempt to thwart spam filters, the mail also contained a significant quantity of text which initially appeared to be part of a magazine article but quickly descended into meaningless strings of words. Moreover, in a further attempt to bypass email monitoring measures, the text was presented in white and therefore undetectable to casual viewing of the mail's content.
During May, the monthly average for spam was 89.37%, with legitimate mail comprising 8.32% and viruses an average of 2.31% (compared to April when spam comprised 91.79%, legitimate mail 7.79% and viruses 0.42% of email).
During the first ten days of the month, virus traffic soared as a result of the phenomenal propagation rate of the latest variant of the Sober virus - variously known as Sober-N, Sober-O and Sober-P - which threatened to eclipse spam as the worse of the two issues for the first time in many months. From May 2nd to 9th, the volume of virus traffic rose from its typical average of between 0.2 and 0.5% to almost 9% of all traffic, a massive eighteen-fold rise in virus activity.
