Founded in 2001 by former Microsoft executive Francis deSouza, IMlogic sells software used to manage and secure enterprise instant messaging (IM) systems.

Symantec plans to integrate IMlogic's security and content inspection capabilities with its anti-spam and anti-virus software, according to Enrique Salem, senior vice president for security products with Symantec.

Symantec and IMlogic have been partners since 2002, allowing Symantec's Enterprise Vault e-mail and content-archiving software to be integrated with IMlogic's IM Manager so that both e-mail and IM traffic could be archived and searched. Symantec said the acquisition will lead to a tighter integration between those two products.

From shipping companies to hedge funds businesses in almost every market segment are adopting real-time technologies like IM at a record pace to improve their information sharing abilities and to decrease the time needed to make business decisions. Consumers have already embraced it as a communications tool and are sending more than 12 billion messages daily, with many users sending more IMs than e-mails. In addition, IM networks are increasingly evolving beyond text messaging and file sharing and can offer voice over IP (VoIP) services for free calling between clients.

"Our customers have asked us for a holistic management tool to control all real-time collaboration and keep it highly available, compliant, and secure," said Francis deSouza, president and CEO, IMlogic. "They understand the requirements for messaging security and a number of them are already using our solutions in combination with Symantec solutions."

IMlogic has about 90 employees. Symantec's Salem could not say whether layoffs were expected following the acquisition, which is expected to close shortly after receiving customary regulatory approvals.
