Gmail servers blacklisted by SpamCop again

January 29, 2006

Several mail servers operated by Google Mail have been placed on the SpamCop blacklist. This means some e-mail sent from a Gmail account will be bounced as spam when sent to Internet service providers using Spamcop as a first line defense against spam.

According to the SpamCop site, the following Gmail SMTP servers were responsible for spam sent to SpamCop spamtrap accounts in the past week.

Gmail routinely gets blacklisted by Spamcop and others because the servers remove the mail sender's IP address from the mail headers (which is a common tactic of spammers). Google defend this practice by saying it protects their users' privacy.

"We have had discussions with Gmail about this. They refuse to include any IP in the headers indicating the injecting user and only have their own IP. All the other large free mailers include the injecting user IP which we recognize as the source of the spam," says SpamCop.
