DarkMyst hacker arrested
March 07, 2006
Richard C. Honour from Seattle, 30, aka Fyle/Anatoly, was indicted by a federal grand jury in St. Louis February 23, and was arrested in Seattle last Friday, on one felony count of transmitting Internet viruses.
According to the indictment, Honour developed and caused the release of malware programs which infected systems associated with an Internet Relay Chat (IRC) chat room called Dark Myst (www.DarkMyst.org).
Honour's harmful programs allowed him to gain unauthorized access to compromised computers. With this access he was able to obtain banking and identity information from those computers. Honour used spam techniques to perpetuate and extend the distribution of his malware.
"This name is not just familiar with DarkMyst, but throughout the IRC community" said Ryan Plume, founder and owner of the DarkMyst IRC network. "Honours' activities affected many IRC networks, many of which were involved in the operation and provided information that led to his arrest."
If convicted, Honour faces a maximum penalty of ten years in prison and/or a fine of $250,000.
"Computer viruses have the potential to cause an incredible amount of damage to the nation's economy," said U.S. Attorney Catherine L. Hanaway. "This office will pursue these cases aggressively."
Hanaway commended the work done on the case by the Federal Bureau of Investigation and Assistant United States Attorney John Bodenhausen, who is handling the case for the U.S. Attorney's Office.
